Historical background
Founded in 1971, they were the first women’s football team in the country to be officially affiliated to a professional men’s team in the 1980s. Millwall continued their development of the women's game by being the first team to open a women's football center of excellence. Many of the country's most successful players have graduated from this academy. Millwall was successful in its application to join the newly-formed Women's Super League 2 for the start of the 2014 campaign.
Colours and Crest
After becoming affiliated with the men's team in the 1980s, Millwall Lionesses also started to wear the same colours as the men's team. This is, of course, a traditional navy top with white shorts. The crest again, similar to the kit is the same as the men's team a white lion on a blue background surrounded by a white border.
Stadium
In 2017 Millwall lionesses started to play their games at the home of Fisher FC, St. Pauls sport ground. This is only temporary, however, as the stadium in Salter Road, Southwark, is undergoing a £1m investment programme which will be brilliant for the football club once renovations are finished.
Stats and Records
In 1992, Millwall completed their first season as a founding members in the newly-created FA Women’s Premier League and in 1993 and 1997 Millwall completed a domestic cup double, seeing off Everton 2-1 to clinch the League Cup, while Lou Waller's goal ensured the Lionesses beat Wembley 1-0 at Upton Park in the FA Cup Final.
Key Players
Because of their academy, Millwall have produced some of the most successful players to come out of the English league. Many graduates of the Lionesses' youth system have gone on to win honours, both on a domestic and international level, including such legends of the women’s game as Hope Powell, Pauline Cope, Mary Phillip and Katie Chapman.
Honours
Millwall is one of the most established and storied clubs in English women’s football. That being said success hasn’t come as easy to them as it has to some of their neighbours in London. In the club's history, they have won 2 Women’s FA Cups, 1 Premier League, one Premier League second division, 3 Kent County Cups and 2 London County Cups.
