Historical Background

Reading Football Club is a professional football club that competes in the EFL (English Football League) Championship, England's second-highest division of football! The club, located in Reading, Berkshire, is one of the oldest in England, since it was founded 148 years ago in 1871!

However, it wasn't until 1920 that the team would turn professional, after being elected into the Football League (today known as the EFL)! Although formerly known as The Biscuitmen, since the biscuit company Huntley & Palmers was originally in Reading, this team has never been crumby!

Crest and Colours

Between 1891-1938, the Royal's colours were royal-blue-and-white vertically striped shirts and royal-blue shorts. Then between 1938-1965, the team switched to blue-and-white striped shirts. Then, in 1965, the team began using all-sky-blue kits, until 1969 when they switched to the previous colours.

Sky-blue was seen again in 1983, alongside white, yellow, and royal-blue. These colours were used until 1992, when the team finally went back to blue and white. The first crest appeared in 1953: it was a shield with the club's initials. It wasn't until 1981 that the club would have another badge, which lasted only 2 years.

It featured 3 elm trees, and the rivers Thames and Kennet. Then, in 1987, a shield with the colours white, sky-blue, royal-blue and yellow was used. In 1996, the team used an updated version of the 1981 badge, until 1998, when a new badge featuring the kit's colours, a crown, and the Maiwand Lion was used.

Stadium

Between 1871 and 1896, Reading changed grounds 4 times: Reading Recreation Ground (1871-1878), Reading Cricket Ground (1878–1882), Coley Park (1882–1889) and Caversham Cricket Ground (1889–1896). The club desperately needed a proper ground to play in.

So, in 1896, Reading played at Elm Park, an abandoned gravel pit which was turned into Reading's home for 102 years, until 1998! Then, after Reading won the Second Division in 1994, and the Taylor Report made all-seater stadiums obligatory for teams in the top-2 divisions, Reading moved to the Madejski Stadium in 1998!

Records

The Royals have proven itself worthy of its rank by winning the EFL Championship twice, the Football League Second Division once and the Football League Third Division twice! Moreover, they also hold the record for the highest number of consecutive league wins with a total of 13 wins in 1985!

Key Players

It's impossible to mention so many excellent players, but here's a few we can't miss: Andy Rinomhota who won this season's Player of the Season award; Andy Yiadom who has a current rating of 7.00 and was the second-most voted player for the Player of the Season; and Liam Moore who won Player of the Season in 2018!
